12. Vaccine Information/Recommended Protocols

Felines:

  • FVRCP ("distemper") - a combination of 3 vaccines which protects against the respiratory viruses: panleukopenia or "distemper," rhinotracheitis or "herpes," and calici. Cats who have never received this vaccine need an initial series of a minimum of two vaccinations 3 to 4 weeks apart.

    • For kittens under 8 weeks old - if they are orphaned and are healthy, the initial series is 3 vaccinations given at 4 week intervals

    • For kittens and cats over 8 weeks - the initial series is 2 vaccinations given at 4 week intervals

    • A booster vaccination is given 1 year later, with a 1 or 3 year booster.

  • FeLV (feline leukemia vaccine) - cats must be tested first for feline leukemia. Negative results are not considered accurate unless the cat is 12 weeks or older.

    • Vaccinations start after 8 weeks of age with a series of 2 vaccinations 3 to 4 weeks apart for the initial series

    • A booster vaccination is given annually

  • Rabies - the initial vaccination is good for 1 year. Rabies vaccinations cannot be given if there is a history of unknown wounds within the last 5 months or if the cat has bitten anyone in the last 10 days. Cats must be at least 4 months old before they can get their first rabies vaccination. For cats, there are two vaccine choices (see Rabies Form for more information):

    • Traditional ("old") - in very rare cases, this vaccine can cause a tumor at the injection site. If the booster is given within 9 to 12 months of the initial vaccination, it is good for 3 years in Massachusetts and 2 years in Rhode Island. If the booster is early or late, it is only good for 1 year.  All subsequent boosters are good for 2 or 3 years even if they are overdue.

      • As of April 15, 2010 in Rhode Island, rabies boosters will be good for 3 years if the vaccine administration date is current. For more information, please visit the RI DEM website to review the Rules and Regulations and the Rabies Manual, or call (401) 222-2781

    • Purevax ("new") - this vaccine does not cause a tumor at the injection site but must be boostered annually regardless of the state residence or the date of the initial vaccination.

Canines:

  • DHP-P ("distemper") - a combination of 4 vaccines which protect against the intestinal and respiratory viruses: distemper, herpes virus, parvovirus, and parainfluenza.

    • For puppies under 8 weeks old - if they are orphaned and healthy, they are given a vaccine every 3 to 4 weeks until they are at least 16 weeks old

    • For puppies and dogs 8 weeks or older - a vaccine is given every 3 to 4 weeks until they are at least 16 weeks old, with a minimum of  2 successive vaccinations given 3 to 4 weeks apart

    • A booster vaccination is given a year later with the option of a 1 or 3 year vaccine

  •  Rabies - for dogs, there is one vaccine choice available. The initial vaccine is good for 1 year regardless of the state of residence and age of the dog, or if the dog's vaccination history is unknown. Rabies vaccinations cannot be given if there is a history of unknown wounds within the last 5 months or if the dog has bitten anyone in the last 10 days. Puppies must be at least 4 months old before they can get their first rabies vaccination.

    • A booster is given within 9 to 12 months of the initial vaccination and is good for 2 to 3 years, depending on your state residence. If the vaccine is given a day early or a day late, the booster is only good for 1 year.

  • Lyme - only given if your dog is at risk of exposure to ticks.

    • The initial series is given at 12 weeks of age and is two vaccinations, 3 weeks apart.

    • A booster vaccination is given annually.

  • Lepto - only given if your dog is at risk for exposure to the urine of skunks, rats, possums, and raccoons. The bacteria is usually found in stagnant water, damp soil and swamps. Leptospirosis can also be transmitted to humans through infected urine.

    • The initial series is started at 12 weeks of age and is 2 vaccinations given 3 to 4 weeks apart

    • A booster vaccination is given annually

  • Bordatella bronchiseptica ("kennel cough") - only given if your dog is at risk of exposure to this particular combination of viral/bacterial infection. Dogs are usually exposed if they are housed in close quarters such as boarding kennels, shelters, doggy day care, and pet stores and/or if their immune system is deficient or suppressed.

    • The initial vaccination is given at 8 weeks old or older and is good for 1 year

    • Usually, a booster is given annually, however, some boarding kennels require that it is given within 6 months of your dog's stay.
