Chocolate Mulch?!? Recently, an email and Facebook posting has been circulated regarding a garden mulch made from cocoa beans. While these articles mention a specific brand, there are a few brands of garden mulches made from cacao (or cocoa) bean shells on the market. These shells are a by-product of chocolate manufacturing. Chocolate is highly toxic to dogs because it contains a chemical called theobromine (see wikipedia for a quick reference) which can be deadly to dogs if ingested. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center website posted this article, which is informative and based on scientific research. We recommend that if you own dogs or cats, avoid using mulches made from cocoa bean shells. And as always, do not feed your dog or cat chocolate!
Buy Postage Stamps and Help Animal Shelters! The US Post Office is issuing new stamps that depict the faces of animals adopted from a New England shelter. The campaign, called "Stamps to the Rescue," aims to raise awareness of the importance of adopting pets from local animal shelters. Additionally, the Post Office, along with Ellen DeGeneres and Halo® Pet Foods will be donating meals to shelter animals with the purchase of the stamps. These cute stamps will be released on April 30, 2010 but you can pre-order them online. Click on this image of the stamp to take you to the USPS site!
